The Future Does Not Exist (Just an Opinion) May 7th, 2008 E-mail to a friend
The future does not exist, obviously.
The past is another
story. It doesn't exist either, but we confuse it with memories that
do. The present is a very slim organic sandwich of two non-existent
concepts.
Now, back to the future.
We are in the
constant combination of the now, and the just now, and the egotistical
belief that we can possibly predict the most anxious part of our
timeline: the future.
Prophets, psychics, marketing-savvy
futurists, and (with all due respect) those asshole "trendspotters" are
looking at a river—made up of the past (where it's flowed), the present
(the rocks at that part of the river) and the future (where the river
will tend to flow). But in a world of global warming and territory
scarcity, the river can overflow and dry up in a second.
An
optimistic future will become the present only when we all see that we
all live on a little rock suspended in space, and when we understand
ourselves to be ants eating a donut. Only then can we finally become
Planetarians.
